Robert E. Angelica, CFA
Robert E. Angelica has served on a number of public and private company, mutual fund, and nonprofit boards of directors. Currently, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Legg Mason (NYSE: LM), a diversified global asset management firm, which he joined in 2007. He chairs the Risk Committee, serves on the Audit Committee, and was a member of a CEO Search Committee of the Legg Mason Board. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Turrell Fund, a foundation fostering developmental services for at-risk youth, which he joined in 2004. He chairs the Finance and Investment, and the Audit Committees, and serves on the Personnel Committee of the Turrell Board.
Previously, Mr. Angelica was a member of the Board of Directors of Simon Property Group (NYSE: SPG), a real estate investment trust,and served on the Compensation Committee of the Simon Board. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Corporate Property Investors (CPI), a private real estate investment trust later acquired by Simon. In addition, he served on mutual fund boards including those of the Capital Group Emerging Markets Growth Fund and the Batterymarch Global Emerging Markets Fund, an institutional mutual fund, and on nonprofit boards including those of the Kidney Cancer Association and Junior Achievement of New York.
Through 2006, Mr. Angelica was Chairman and CEO of the AT&T Investment Management Corporation (ATTIMCO), a wholly owned subsidiary of AT&T and SEC-registered investment adviser. He was responsible for the investment of more than $80 billion of employee benefit assets for AT&T and third parties. He oversaw asset allocation, selection of outside investment managers and custodians, in-house asset management, risk management, compliance, accounting, reporting, client service, and administration. After joining the AT&T Investment Management Division in 1978, he attained levels of increasing responsibility, and was appointed President and Chief Investment Officer of ATTIMCO upon its formation in 1992. He became Chairman and CEO in 1999. Before joining AT&T, he worked for six years as a securities analyst with the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company.
Mr. Angelica served in leadership positions in the investment and pension industries includingas a member of the Board of Governors of the CFA Institute, the Board of Directors of the Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance (Q-Group), and the NYSE Pension Managers Advisory Committee (PMAC). He was Chairman of the Committee on Investment of Employee Benefit Assets (CIEBA), the leading national association of corporate pension fund executives.
Mr. Angelica was as a guest speaker on investments at leading business schools including Stanford, Wharton, Columbia, and Tuck, and taught graduate courses in investments and economics part-time at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
He graduated from Rutgers University in 1971 earning a BA degree, magna cum laude, in economics, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1976 he received an MBA degree, with distinction, in finance from New York University. He was awarded the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation in 1977. He completed executive programs in investment management at Stanford in 1981 and Harvard in 1996.
